Training your puppy to come when he is called is one of the most important safety behaviors they can learn. This should be one of the first and most often practiced behavior from early on.
The method of teaching your puppy to come is fairly easy, however, it’s something that should be continually practiced for years after.
We always call our puppies by saying “Puppy, puppy, puppy!” in a quick, high pitched tone. If you want your puppy to learn their name or to come to a different word, just start using that word in addition to “puppy, puppy”.
Quick Start Method
Once again, the full extent of training a puppy to come is beyond the scope of our Puppy Prep Course. To continue your puppy’s training, be sure to sign up for Baxter & Bella Online Puppy School. They have lots of great games and activities to help your puppy master “Come”.
Move away from your puppy and call them to you.
When the puppy comes to your feet, reward them with a treat.
Repeat 5 times per training session
If the puppy is very friendly and insists on following you constantly, you may want to have a second person hold the puppy for a moment and release him when you call.
As your puppy masters coming when called in a familiar room, start practicing with fun games like hide-and-seek or in different, more distracting situations.
