Heartworm, fleas, and ticks are a pain to deal with and can cause serious health problems for your pets. Fleas cause intense itching and even anemia from blood loss, ticks carry diseases such as lyme disease, and heartworms can cause heart and lung failure.
Luckily, they are all fairly easy to prevent with a wide range of medications available today.
I’m not going to get into all the different products to help prevent heartworms, fleas, and ticks. After all, that is something you and your veterinarian should determine. What I want to inform you on is that it is important to establish a monthly preventative routine to deter these pests from harming your puppy.
Most medical professionals recommend starting your puppy on heartworm prevention no later than 8 weeks old and keeping them on it year-round.
Certain flea and tick preventatives can be used as early as 8 weeks as well, but others are not, so be sure to consult your vet.
