Puppy Training
Let’s talk about puppy training. It’s a lot of work, it’s super important, and it can be incredibly fun and rewarding! At Joley Aire we specialize in family dogs. A true family dog has a calm, easy going temperament and is well trained. There is nothing in the world that can replace the value of a dog that fits that definition and we are passionate about helping you achieve it with your puppy.
It’s an unfortunate fact in this world that many puppies are bought on a whim and brought into homes where there isn’t a commitment to the training and work they need to function appropriately in the home. When people neglect to teach puppies how to act and where their boundaries are, they are bound to mess up. For some, those mess ups mean they will be re-homed or put in a shelter. We never want that to happen to a Joley Aire puppy!
On the other side of things is the fact that when a puppy owner invests a little time and effort to train their new family member, they will undoubtedly be rewarded with an amazing dog for years to come! The contrast of a good dog and a frustrating dog is black and white and it all has to do with training.
After years of living with, working with, and learning about dogs, we’ve developed an approach toward training that we’d like to share with you. These principles are what guide our training decisions for our own dogs as well as the puppies we raise.
In the forefront of everything we do is this concept of family dogs. That means the dogs are:
Calm & Polite
Never aggressive
Good listeners/Responsive to their owner
Comfortable in the typical family home
Well socialized with other dogs and people
To achieve that in a dog, our training approach isn’t fancy. We don’t teach our dogs outrageous tricks, fast paced agility, or how to stand in front of a judge. We focus on relationship, communication, and socialization. It’s all about shaping dogs to co-exist with a human world in a typical family home.
Our training approach
Two key programs
We use two key programs to help us achieve these goals with our puppies: Puppy Culture and Baxter & Bella. These programs teach the same training philosophies we have and are so similar in their approach that they flow almost seamlessly.
Puppy Culture follows a carefully researched and scientifically based protocol to use during the first 12 weeks of a puppy's life. It includes many training and socialization exercises with the goal to produce dogs that grow to be calm, confident, and easy to work with throughout their entire life. The training used in Puppy Culture uses positive reinforcement and clickers.
We love Puppy Culture and follow it as closely as we can while raising our puppies. While Puppy Culture does provide some resources for new owners, we have found that it is primarily focused on breeders and not the best fit for every new puppy buyer.
That's where Baxter & Bella come in!
Baxter & Bella is an online puppy school that helps puppy owners (that's you!) learn how to successfully integrate a dog into their everyday life by using positive training techniques in a fun, rewarding, and worthwhile ways! There is SO MUCH offered in this program! Not only do they provide a comprehensive online course that teaches everything you need to know to train and socialize your new puppy, but they also provide live video calls with a professional dog trainer anytime you need them!
So, to make things simple, Puppy Culture is what we use as breeders, and Baxter & Bella is what you can use as a puppy owner. The result of these two programs together in the formative weeks of your puppy’s life is powerful. This is what will bring the results I talked about before!
