Every December, the internet fills with warnings:

“Don’t Get a Puppy for Christmas!”
“Puppies Aren’t Presents!”

And while those articles come from a good place (we all want what’s best for dogs), they often miss the bigger truth: it’s absolutely fine to get a puppy for Christmas — as long as you prepare well and choose the right breeder.

Because really, bringing home a puppy is a big deal no matter what time of year you do it. The key isn’t the date — it’s the intentionality.

So, I took some time to write down a few points on why I think Christmas is a great time to bring home a puppy.

The holidays are one of the few seasons when families actually slow down and spend time at home together. School is on break, sports pause, and even work schedules tend to lighten up.

That makes it the perfect time to welcome a puppy. You’ll have extra time for bonding, crate training, and helping your new little one settle in without the rush of normal routines. Those first few days are so important for building trust and consistency, and Christmas break gives you just the right window to do that well.

2. You’re Not Impulsive — You’re Intentional

There’s a big difference between picking up a random puppy on a whim and thoughtfully preparing to add a new family member.
