Why It’s Totally OK to Get a Puppy for Christmas
Every December, the internet fills with warnings:
“Don’t Get a Puppy for Christmas!”
“Puppies Aren’t Presents!”
And while those articles come from a good place (we all want what’s best for dogs), they often miss the bigger truth: it’s absolutely fine to get a puppy for Christmas — as long as you prepare well and choose the right breeder.
Because really, bringing home a puppy is a big deal no matter what time of year you do it. The key isn’t the date — it’s the intentionality.
So, I took some time to write down a few points on why I think Christmas is a great time to bring home a puppy.
1. You Finally Have Time to Adjust
The holidays are one of the few seasons when families actually slow down and spend time at home together. School is on break, sports pause, and even work schedules tend to lighten up.
That makes it the perfect time to welcome a puppy. You’ll have extra time for bonding, crate training, and helping your new little one settle in without the rush of normal routines. Those first few days are so important for building trust and consistency, and Christmas break gives you just the right window to do that well.
2. You’re Not Impulsive — You’re Intentional
There’s a big difference between picking up a random puppy on a whim and thoughtfully preparing to add a new family member.
If you’ve been researching the breed, preparing your home, and choosing a responsible breeder (hi 👋 that’s us at Joley Aire), then you’re already doing everything right.
You can absolutely plan for a Christmas puppy responsibly. Many of our families reserve their puppies months in advance so everything’s ready before the holidays — crate, toys, food, vet appointments, and all.
3. A Puppy Can Be the Gift of Companionship
A puppy isn’t just a “present.” It’s a living, breathing companion that brings joy, laughter, and purpose into a home.
For kids, especially, the experience of helping care for a puppy teaches so many life lessons — empathy, consistency, patience, and responsibility. It’s a gift that grows with them, day after day, long after the wrapping paper is gone.
4. Puppies Raised with Family, for Family
At Joley Aire, our puppies are raised in our home — not a kennel. They’re handled daily by our kids, loved on, and exposed to all the normal sights and sounds of family life.
That means when one of our puppies goes home at Christmas, they’re not overwhelmed — they’re ready. They’ve grown up in the same kind of environment they’re going into: full of warmth, laughter, and people who care.
5. We Have Puppies Ready for Christmas 2025
If you’ve been dreaming about surprising your family with a Bernedoodle puppy this Christmas, this is your sign.
We have two Standard F1 Bernedoodle litters that will be ready to go home in early December 2025 — just in time for Christmas!
We’re also happy to accommodate holiday scheduling for families who prefer to bring their puppy home a little closer to Christmas Day. Whether you want your puppy settled before the festivities or arriving as the sweetest Christmas surprise, we’ll help you plan the timing that works best for your family.
6. The Key Is Preparation
The truth is, the success of adding a puppy to your family doesn’t depend on the date — it depends on you.
If you’ve…
✅ Done your breed research
✅ Prepared your home and supplies
✅ Talked through family responsibilities
✅ Set up your vet and grooming plan
…then you’re ready. Whether it’s July, October, or December 25th, that’s what matters most.
7. Start the New Year with Joy
There’s something beautiful about beginning a new year with a new companion. Training goals, morning walks, and cozy puppy snuggles — it’s the kind of refresh that fills your home with life and laughter.
So yes — it’s okay to get a puppy for Christmas. In fact, it might be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.
Bottom line:
When done thoughtfully, bringing home a Christmas puppy isn’t irresponsible — it’s magical.
At Joley Aire, our puppies are raised with love, socialized with kids, and ready to become part of your story.
